Steel Wire Armoured (SWA) Cable from Expert Electrical Supplies

Steel Wire Armoured (SWA) cable is a robust type of cable specifically designed for main power distribution and other heavy-duty applications, often used for underground or external installations due to its ability to withstand mechanical stresses. It is typically used in industrial areas, for outdoor events, or in any setting where the cable may be at risk from damage.

Construction

The construction of SWA cable comprises several layers. The innermost layer is typically composed of copper or aluminum conductors, responsible for carrying the electric current. Surrounding the conductors, there is an insulating layer, usually made of PVC or XLPE.

XLPE stands for Cross-Linked Polyethylene. It is a type of polyethylene with cross-links, and it is used as insulation material in electric power cables.

This dureable construction prevents the conductors from making contact with each other or with external objects. Above the insulating layer, there is a bedding layer which serves to protect the insulation from mechanical damage. The characteristic feature of SWA cable is the steel wire armour layer that surrounds the bedding. This steel wire layer provides excellent mechanical protection, enhancing the cable’s durability and resistance to damage. Finally, an outer sheath, usually made of PVC, encloses the entire assembly, providing further protection against environmental conditions like moisture, chemicals, and UV radiation.

Applications

SWA cables are versatile and are used in a variety of applications, ranging from mains electricity supply, in internal, external, underground, and even underwater projects. They are particularly useful in industrial settings, construction sites, and other areas where cables might be subjected to mechanical stress or harsh environmental conditions. The steel wire armour not only serves as a protective layer but also as a form of grounding, which can be crucial in preventing electric shocks or fire hazards.

Advantages

The main advantage of SWA cable is its robustness and ability to withstand mechanical damage, which makes it ideal for applications where the cable may be at risk. Its construction provides protection against the ingress of water, making it suitable for direct burial in the ground. The steel wire armour also provides a level of protection against rodents, who might otherwise damage the cable. Additionally, SWA cables offer a high level of electrical safety, with the steel wire armour serving as an earth conductor, reducing the risk of electric shock and fire.

Considerations

While SWA cables are highly durable and versatile, they are also heavier and less flexible compared to other cable types. Special tools and connectors are required for terminating SWA cables, and care must be taken to ensure that the steel wire armour is correctly grounded. The weight and rigidity of SWA cable can also make installation more challenging, particularly in applications where space is limited or where the cable needs to navigate around obstacles.

In conclusion, Steel Wire Armoured cable is a specialised type of cable designed for durability and safety in applications where there is a high risk of mechanical damage or exposure to harsh environmental conditions. Its construction, consisting of multiple layers including conductors, insulation, bedding, steel wire armour, and an outer sheath, provides comprehensive protection and reliable power distribution in a variety of settings.

SWA Cable Glands

For many years you mainly used BW gland kits for indoor applications and CW gland kits for outdoors but now you have the option of using Storm cable glands from Specialist Wiring Accessories. These universal gland kits have been very popular with electrical contractors as they can be used with a wide selection of cables including armoured and non armoured.
